How Does Solar Energy Work?
Education12 February 2023
Understanding how solar panels work can help you appreciate the technology sitting on your roof.
The Photovoltaic Effect
Solar panels consist of photovoltaic (PV) cells made of silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it knocks electrons loose from their atoms. This flow of electrons creates an electric current.
Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC)
The electricity generated by solar panels is Direct Current (DC). However, most homes and the grid use Alternating Current (AC). This is where the inverter comes in. It converts DC into AC electricity that powers your home.
Net Metering
In a grid-tied system, any excess energy you produce flows back into the grid, spinning your meter backwards (or crediting your account). At night, you draw power from the grid. You are only billed for the "net" energy consumed.
